Logan Martin Lake is located in east central Alabama on the Coosa River approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of Birmingham, Alabama. This 17,000 acre Coosa River reservoir was built in 1965 by Alabama Power Company. The lake, nicknamed Lake of a Thousand Coves by locals, has 275 miles of shoreline along its 48.5 mile length sandwiched between Logan Martin Dam on the south and Neely Henry Dam on the north. The depth of the lake is 35 to 110 feet with only five feet average water level variance. With some of the nation’s finest bass fishing, Lake Logan Martin also is fun for boating, skiing and swimming.The lake borders St. Clair and Talladega counties. The reservoir extends 48.5 miles (78.1 km) from Logan Martin Dam upstream to Neely Henry Dam, and it contains 15,263 acres (61.77 km2). Because of this week’s heavy rain, Alabama Power Co. has opened spillway gates at Henry Dam on the Coosa River. Spillway gates will open later today at Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell and Jordan dams to help manage flows on the Coosa and rising lake levels, according to a news release from Alabama Power.
ReplyDeleteWeiss Lake, also on the Coosa, is expected to crest near its summer pool level of 564 feet on Friday or Saturday. On the Warrior River, Smith Lake is expected to rise above its normal summer pool level of 510 feet sometime today and reach a peak elevation near 513 feet in the next day or two, the release states.
Alabama Power will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and manage resources carefully. Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property, the release states.
